How to Use the Technic Launcher
The Technic launcher is a third-party Minecraft launcher designed specifically for playing modpacks. Instead of manually downloading and configuring individual mods, the Technic Launcher does all the heavy lifting for you by bundling everything into a single, easy-to-use platform.
Players use the Technic Launcher to access a wide variety of modpacks, like Tekkit SMP, Tekkit 2, Hexxit II, and Attack of the B-Team, that add new features, mechanics, and content to the game. Whether you’re looking for adventure, magic, technology, or all of the above, Technic makes it simple to explore and switch between modded Minecraft experiences with just a few clicks.
Downloading and Installing the Launcher
Start by downloading the file for the Technic launcher. You can find this here: https://www.technicpack.net/download
Save this file somewhere you can easily access it, such as your Desktop.
Double click the downloaded file and the launcher will be installed. This file will become your way to open the launcher, so don’t delete it.
Once installed, you’ll need to add your Microsoft account. Click Add Microsoft Account and log in with the Microsoft account where you own Minecraft.
Once you’ve logged in, you’ll be taken to the Discover tab where you’ll see Technic’s own featured packs, as well as a list of community modpacks that are trending.
Switching over to the Modpacks tab will initially present you with a list of Technic’s official packs. These are modpacks that have been made by the Technic team themselves. Clicking on any of these will show you a description of the modpack as well as patch notes for any updates the pack has received.
The News tab shows any announcements made by the Technic team. They are available to read right in the launcher, and a red dot will appear on the News tab when a new one has been posted.
Adjusting Launcher Settings
Launcher settings can be adjusted by clicking the Launcher Options button in the top right corner. Here, you can change several settings about how the launcher operates. Generally, most of these settings can be left alone, however, there are a few that need to be adjusted from time-to-time. The main ones are the Java version and the RAM allocation under the Java Settings tab.
Minecraft Java Version
The dropdown will show a list of all the versions of Java currently installed on your computer. This is important because older versions of Minecraft usually require using an older version of Java.
Minecraft Version | Recommended Java Version |
---|---|
1.5.2 and Older | Java 6 |
1.6 to 1.7.10 | Java 7 |
1.8 to 1.11 | Java 8 |
1.12 to 1.16.4 | Java 11 |
1.16.5 | Java 16 |
1.17.1 to 1.19.2 | Java 17 |
1.20+ | Java 21 |
Memory
This setting controls how much RAM Minecraft will use. Modpacks require more RAM than vanilla Minecraft, and not allocating enough is the leading cause of poor performance. By default, this is set to 3.5 GB, which is the minimum recommended amount of RAM to run a modpack. Some modpacks require more, and when the Technic launcher detects this, it will prompt you and automatically change this setting to the minimum recommended by the modpack author. If you notice your game periodically freezing and then returning to normal, this is a telltale sign that your client is running out of RAM and this setting should be increased.
Finding a Modpack
A few trending modpacks can be seen on the Discover tab on the launcher, however, the best way to browse modpacks is on the Technic website. You can find their modpack browser here: https://www.technicpack.net/modpacks
By default, the list will show all community created modpacks sorted by trending. You can change this by clicking the dropdown to the left of the search bar, where you can choose from Most Popular, Trending, Recently Updated, and New Modpacks. To the right of this dropdown is a toggle to only see Technic’s official packs. These are the same as the ones listed by default in the Modpacks tab on the launcher. In the search box, you can either enter the name of a modpack you’re looking for, or the name of a specific mod you want. In the case of searching for a mod, it will list out modpacks that have this mod in them.
Installing a Modpack
Once you have found the modpack you want to install, head back over to the launcher and go to the Modpacks tab. In the search bar at the top left, enter the name of the modpack. Click on the pack in the list. This will open the description for the modpack and show patch notes from the latest updates. To install the modpack, click the Install button in the lower right.
The launcher will then begin downloading the necessary mods and Forge version and install them. Once it’s complete, the Install button will be replaced with a Play button.
Launching a Modpack
Now that the modpack is installed, it can be found in the Modpacks tab on the launcher. To launch the modpack, click on it in the list, then click the Play button in the lower right corner.
Updating a Modpack
If an update to the modpack is available, a small green arrow will appear next to the pack name to let you know. When launching the pack, you will be prompted to update the modpack before it opens.
To update the modpack manually, click Modpack Options in the top right under the Installed Version. Here you can select the version that is installed. Once you’ve selected the version you want, click Reinstall in the lower right.
