Minecraft Error: Failed to verify username

What does it mean?

The failed to verify username error means your client or game was not able to authenticate its session with the mojang servers. There are actually a lot of different reasons this error may occur.

Possible causes and troubleshooting:

  • Mojang Server outage: While not common, the mojang authentication servers may be offline. During this time you will not be able to join any minecraft server that is setup to authenticate the users session with mojang. With this there is nothing that you usually need to do and it is recommended to just close minecraft and wait about 10-20 minutes and try again.

  • Firewall/Internet Issues: Your computer's firewall might be blocking the outgoing connection to Mojang's servers or internet connection to the minecraft launcher in general. You will want to ensure your firewall is not set to disallow traffic to the minecraft launcher. If your firewall is not blocking access, you can also try a different connection to rule out potential issues with your internet service provider.

  • Server-Side Issues: The server itself in which you are trying to join is not able to connect to the mojang servers. If this is your server it is recommended to try stopping then starting the server again. If you are still not able to join your server after a reboot but are able to join other public servers, please contact support for further assistance.

  • Multiple Logins: Logging in on multiple devices or using multiple Minecraft instances on the same computer at the same time can cause authentication problems. In this situation only the last launched instance of the game will be authenticated with mojang and all game sessions launched prior will no longer be  authenticated. If you have more than one paid minecraft account you can launch and use each account on the same computer concurrently.

  • Online Mode: If the server is configured for "online mode" and you are using a non-premium or sometimes referred to as a “cracked” version of Minecraft, you'll get this error. You cannot join any server that uses online mode to authenticate with the mojang servers.
