Forge

Forge is a long time standing mod loader for minecraft that has been around for around 14 years and has built its reputation for having a large mod library for anything ranging from graphic shaders to complex mods that can totally change the gameplay. Forge is also the base for many of the long running modpacks. 

Pros of forge:

  • Large ecosystem and mod library

  • Complex mods can change the whole gameplay such as Mekanism, Applied Energistics and Botania.

  • Mods canhave intercompatibility with each other which allows mods to expand with additional mods

Cons of Forge:

  • Long loading times. It can take several minutes for the game to load depending on the mods/modpack that is in use. 

  • Updates can lag behind new Minecraft updates. 

  • More memory (RAM) usage

Forge is a great option for anyone who wants to play one of the many premade modpaks such as those from the FTB(Feed The Beast) team or anyone that wants access to the largest library of available mods to create their own modpack. 

Fabric

Farbic is a relatively new mod loader that started about some time ago but only started to gain real traction in the last few years. Its main focus is to be more lightweight and have quicker update cycles compared to Forge. Fabric focuses more on performance and expanded vanilla game play vs overhauling or adding to the game like forge mods focus on mainly. 

Pros of Fabric:

  • Near Vanilla like loading times

  • Updates in a more timely manner after a Minecraft update. 

  • Lower resource usage 

Cons of Fabric:

  • Much smaller mod selection compared to Forge.

  • Smaller selection of pre-made modpacks. 

Fabric is a great option for anyone who just wants to improve performance of their game and not wanting to completely change the whole gameplay. It’s also great for those who always like to be on the latest release of minecraft as soon as possible since Fabric and its mods update much quicker than forge due to its simpler framework over forge.
