How to Allocate More RAM to Minecraft Launchers

Having sufficient RAM for various versions of Minecraft both vanilla and modded is important for the game’s performance and for preventing client-side game crashes. In this article, we’ll go over how to allocate more RAM to some of the most commonly used Launchers.

Minecraft Launcher

  1. Open the Launcher and verify you’re on the Java Edition section of the launcher.

  2. Click on the installations tab and find which installation you want to allocate more RAM to.Accessing the installations tab in the Minecraft Launcher

  3. Hover over the installation you want to allocate more RAM to and click on the more options (3-dot menu) and click on edit.

  4. Click on the More Options text.

  5. Change the number after the argument -Xmx to allocate more RAM. (i.e. -Xmx1G = 1GB of RAM, -Xmx6G = 6GB of RAM etc.)

ATLauncher

ATLauncher has two different ways to allocate RAM. The first way being the way to set the default RAM for all instances. The second is to set the RAM for an individual instance.

Setting the Default RAM Allocation for All Instances

  1. Click on Settings on the sidebar.

  2. Click the Java/Minecraft tab.

  3. Change the Maximum Memory/Ram option to allocate more RAM as the default for all ATLauncher instances. Note that this option is in Megabytes, a Gigabyte is approximately 1024 Megabytes (i.e. 1GB = 1024MB, 4GB = 4096MB, etc.)

Allocating RAM to an Individual Instance

  1. Click on “Instances” in the sidebar.

  2. Click on the settings button for the instance you want to allocate more RAM to.

  3. Click on the Java/Minecraft Settings tab.

CurseForge App

Curseforge also has two different ways of allocating RAM. The first way would be to set the default RAM for the launcher as a general setting that applies to all profiles unless overridden by individual profile settings. The second would be to set the RAM for a specific profile in the profile settings

  1. Click the gear icon in the lower left to open the settings.

  2. In the settings menu click on Minecraft under Game Specific Settings.

  3. Scroll down to find the Allocated Memory slider under the Java Settings.

  4. Move the Slider to allocate RAM. The slider is in megabytes, a gigabyte is approximately 1024 megabytes. (i.e. 1GB = 1024MB, 4GB = 4096MB etc.)

Allocating more RAM to a Specific Profile

  1. Go to the My Modpacks section of the CurseForge launcher.

  2. Click on anywhere on the profile tile you want to select except for the play button.

  3. Open the 3-dot options menu next to the play button and click on “Profile Options”.

  4. Uncheck the use system memory settings box.

  5. Move the Slider to allocate RAM. The slider is in megabytes, a gigabyte is approximately 1024 megabytes. (i.e. 1GB = 1024MB, 4GB = 4096MB etc.)

FTB App

  1. Go to the Library section of the FTB App.

  2. Hover over an installation and click anywhere on that installation except the play button.

  3. On the following screen, click on settings.

  4. Move the Slider to allocate RAM.

Technic Launcher

  1. In the top right corner, click on Launcher Options.

  2. Click on Java Settings.

  3. Use the Memory dropdown to select how much RAM to allocate.

MultiMC

  1. Right click the instance you want to allocate more memory to.

  2. Click Edit Instance.

  4. Check the box next to Memory.

  5. Change the value for Maximum Memory Allocation to allocate more RAM.

Void Launcher

  1. Click the options icon in the top right corner.

  2. Use the Memory Size to Allocate To Minecraft dropdown to allocate more RAM.
