How to Change the Loot Rarity on a Project Zomboid Server
Loot rarity settings control how frequently different types of supplies appear throughout a Project Zomboid world. Each category can be adjusted separately, allowing you to create anything from a supply-rich building server to a world where finding one decent can opener feels like winning the lottery.
Change Loot Rarity on Your Project Zomboid Server
Navigate to your Nodecraft dashboard.
Locate your Project Zomboid server and click Panel.
Stop the server.
Click Game Settings in the menu on the left.
Open the Loot tab.
Choose the desired rarity for each loot category.
Click Submit to save your changes.
Start the server.
Project Zomboid Loot Categories Explained
Project Zomboid separates loot into multiple categories instead of using one setting for every item. This lets you make one resource plentiful without filling every cabinet and warehouse with supplies.
Food and Canned Food: Controls perishable food and shelf-stable canned goods.
Literature and Media: Controls books, magazines, skill materials, recordings, and similar media.
Survival Gear, Tools, Materials, Farming, and Cookware: Controls supplies used for building, crafting, farming, cooking, fishing, trapping, and general survival.
Medical: Controls medicine, bandages, first-aid supplies, and related items.
Weapons, Ranged Weapons, and Ammo: Controls melee weapons, firearms, ammunition, magazines, and related combat supplies.
Mechanics: Controls vehicle parts, tools, manuals, and other automotive supplies.
Clothing and Containers: Controls wearable items, bags, and portable storage.
Keys, Mementos, and Other: Controls keys, keepsakes, miscellaneous objects, and items that do not fit another category.
Loot Rarity Levels Explained
None: Disables normal loot rolls for that category.
Insanely Rare: Makes the selected items exceptionally difficult to find.
Extremely Rare: Creates severe scarcity while still allowing occasional finds.
Rare: Keeps resources limited and makes looting an important part of survival.
Normal: Provides a more neutral amount of the selected loot.
Common: Makes the selected items easier to find.
Abundant: Produces the highest normal availability for the selected category.
Setting a category to None does not guarantee that every related item disappears. Items placed by stories, special scenes, zombies, mods, or other systems may still appear because those sources can use separate rules.
Does Loot Rarity Affect Existing Items?
Loot rarity changes apply to newly generated loot rolls. They do not remove supplies that players already collected or automatically replace the contents of locations that have already generated.
On an existing world, test the new settings in unexplored areas. If loot respawn is enabled, future respawned items will also use the current loot rules, but loot respawn is controlled separately from rarity.
Recommended Loot Setups
Harsh Survival: Set food, canned food, medical supplies, weapons, and ammunition to Rare or lower.
Builder-Friendly: Increase tools, materials, farming supplies, cookware, and survival gear while leaving combat supplies limited.
Action-Focused: Increase weapons and ammunition while keeping food and medical supplies closer to Normal.
Why Is the New Loot Rarity Not Working?
Confirm that the server was stopped before the change, the settings were submitted, and the server was restarted. Test in an unexplored location because containers and areas that already generated will not be rerolled simply because the rarity changed.
If the results still look incorrect, review installed mods and custom sandbox files. Loot mods can add their own distributions or override the values selected in the control panel.
Final Thoughts
Loot rarity has a major effect on the pace of a Project Zomboid server. Adjust categories independently, protect the resources that matter to your community, and remember that scarcity is fun right up until everyone is fighting over the same half-empty bottle of disinfectant.
