Terraria 1.4.5 Update Overview: Bigger & Boulder

The Terraria 1.4.5 update has officially launched, marking the start of the game’s 15th anniversary celebration! The Bigger & Boulder update focuses on expanding existing systems, improving usability, and adding new content without changing the core feel of the game.

If you have ever wished crafting was less of a mess, inventory management took less time, or world seeds were easier to use, this update was absolutely built for you!

Here’s what Terraria 1.4.5 is bringing:

Crafting Interface Improvements

Terraria 1.4.5 introduces a redesigned crafting interface aimed at making large recipe lists easier to manage. Recipes are now organized into categories such as weapons and furniture and can be searched directly, similar to how Research and Duplication work in Journey Mode.

The previous grid-style view is still available for players who prefer it too! The new interface simply adds an alternative that is easier to navigate, especially with the game now containing over 6,000 items. That's a lot... 🤯

Crafting from nearby chests has also been added. Materials stored in nearby containers can now be used automatically without moving them into your inventory. Even better yet, this feature can be toggled on or off through the crafting menu.

Inventory and Banner Management Changes

There are several inventory-related changes introduced in this update. All identical items are now fully stackable, including items with the same prefixes or suffixes. This reduces storage clutter and really helps make inventory management more consistent.

A new banner menu also allows players to claim banner effects without carrying banners in their inventory or storing them in chests! Keep in mind though, players still need to earn banners normally before claiming their effects.

Spectator Mode for Multiplayer

Now, when a player is defeated on a multiplayer server, Terraria 1.4.5 allows them to spectate other players while waiting to respawn. Players can switch between teammates and view gameplay from their perspective until the respawn timer ends. This will definitely help time pass until you can respawn.

NPC Housing and Management Updates

Town NPCs no longer require a valid home in order to spawn in the world. NPCs without housing will retreat to safety and will not be available at night until they have a proper home. The Housing Query feature has also been updated! It now provides a visual scan of housing areas and shows icons for missing requirements, along with the existing text feedback.

Expanded World Seed System

This is definitely a change we're all looking forward to! Special world seeds are now accessible through a dedicated menu during world creation. Players can select special seed types directly and make combos that you want to try.

Bonus points for a new Skyblock world seed being added. In this world type, players start on a small floating island with limited resources and must build outward to progress.

Several new secret seeds and seed effects are also included, such as altered spawn behavior, persistent weather conditions, seasonal environments, and modified dungeon layouts. Looking at you "jingle all the way". 👀

Some seeds still remain hidden and must be discovered through experimentation!

New Content and Crossovers

This update adds over 650 new items, bringing the total item count above 6,000.

The long-awaited Terraria side of the Dead Cells crossover is included, featuring new vanity items, furniture, and weapons inspired by Dead Cells and adapted to Terraria’s style. The update also introduces Palworld crossover content, adding several Pals to Terraria. These Pals appear in the world and provide functional assistance, such as helping with mining or resource gathering. I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to having a Digtoise.

New Items, Blocks, and Sets

Several new block and furniture sets are included, such as Corruption & Crimson, Aetherium, Gothic, and other themed sets. New summoner whips and prefixes, additional transformations, and novelty items like the RC Car are also part of this update.

Visuals and Music Changes

Terraria 1.4.5 focuses heavily on atmosphere. The update adds new biome backgrounds, visual environmental effects like Aurora Borealis, and sprite updates. Changes include visible fish while fishing, sun phase effects, lightning and thunderstorms, and updated banner and trophy sprites. These updates are visual in nature and do not impact the balance in gameplay.

Eight new boss music tracks have also been added, giving each boss its own theme. Additional tracks are available through music boxes. Of course, these tracks will be added to the official soundtrack where supported.

Console and Mobile-Specific Features

Console and mobile versions aren't left out of the fun either. They will receive several control updates, including a customizable radial button system, an improved mobile control editor, dynamic controller hints, and multi-touch functionality. Primary and secondary action handling has been reworked for certain items, and a new proximity interact feature allows interaction with objects near the player without repositioning the cursor.

Conclusion

Terraria 1.4.5 is the kind of update that sneaks up on you. You log in to “check things out” and suddenly your crafting feels smoother, your world feels stranger, and you are three hours deep into a seed you didn't expect. The Bigger & Boulder update does not spell everything out, and that feels intentional. Some changes are obvious the moment you start playing. Others take time, experimentation, or a few questionable world seed choices to uncover. That sense of discovery has always been part of Terraria, and this update leans into it hard.

So, build something new, break something old, and maybe keep an eye out for things that do not behave the way you expect. Terraria still has a few surprises left.
