Windrose has launched into early access today with a meteoric impact on the UGC multiplayer space. With 1.5 million wishlists and an early 90% "Very Positive" review on Steam, the survival pirate adventure game is like the baby of Valheim and Sea of Thieves that no one knew they wanted.
But if you're trying to play and set up a server today, you might already be familiar with the other side of launch day: your server may be struggling to connect.
Common Windrose Server Issues Right Now
"Server not found" errors when entering an invite code
"Join error: not found" when connecting through the Steam friends list
Hosts unable to start sessions, the game loads briefly, then kicks back to the main menu
IP and port conflicts preventing players from reaching dedicated servers
DNS and NAT-related blocks silently killing connections before the game even handshakes
Some of these are early access launch quirks, but others are tied to the dedicated server hosting configuration by hosting providers.
Why Smart Captains are Looking for Nitrado Alternatives
Nitrado is offered as the "prefered hosting partner" ingame for Windrose, but launch day has not been smooth sailing for some captains. If you've rented Nitrado servers for similar survival games you'll notice the same issues:
Unreliable performance during major launches is caused by high demand on launch day, and can result in more frequent and avoidable lag spikes than you should be experiencing.
Difficult to use Control Panel makes it hard to set settings for Worlds and other in-game features.
Slow launch-day readiness can delay server owners from creating their server when the game goes live.
None of these issues make selecting Nitrado a bad choice for server hosting. But for games like Windrose, where the more you explore, build, and expand the world of your server, the worse these issues can be exacerbated.
What Nodecraft Does Differently
We take launch-day-readiness seriously and have been working with the publisher of Windrose to test servers and deep game build features into our server hosting immediately at early-access launch.
Additionally, the custom hosting platform and control panel that Nodecraft built gives servers dedicated resources so that other captains running servers won't slow down your own, or cause server crashes as the memory requirements grow.
Curious what that looks like? We've built an interactive World Manager for Windrose server owners that lets you manage, create, and update settings for your server so you don't have to jump into ServerDescription.json or WorldDescription.json files manually.
Instant Server Deploy, No Waiting
Your Windrose game server is live in less than 30 seconds of ordering. No queues, no waiting for long deployments, or any other slowdowns. You order, setup, and play!
Fast Ryzen CPUs to cut down lag
All customers at Nodecraft can transparently see what CPU their server is running on. As we showcase in our Hardware Specs page, we use some of the latest AMD Ryzen CPUs with ECC RAM to ensure your game always runs uninterrupted and reduces lag as much as possible.
Common Windrose Connection Fixes
If you're stuck right now trying to connect to any Windrose server, here are the most common fixes the community has found:
Complete the tutorial first — both host and joiners need to finish the tutorial before co-op works reliably.
Host loads in first — wait until you're fully in-world before inviting friends.
Use "Host a Game," not "Solo/Offline" — an offline save isn't a multiplayer session until you relaunch it as one.
Check your DNS — players using custom DNS (like NextDNS or Pi-hole) have reported blocks on
windrose.support, the domain the game uses for connectivity. Whitelist it or switch to Google DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4).Check your NAT type — strict NAT causes most peer-to-peer join failures. Enable UPnP in your router or forward the relevant UDP ports.
Disable VPNs — VPN routing can interfere with the game's handshake process.
Check your firewall — make sure Windrose and the dedicated server tool aren't being blocked by Windows Firewall or third-party antivirus software.
Switch to a dedicated server — peer-to-peer hosting is inherently fragile, especially with IPv4/IPv6 mismatches between players. A properly hosted dedicated server eliminates the "host player" bottleneck entirely.
The Bottom Line
Windrose is going to be one of many hotly anticipated launches in the survival & UGC Multiplayer space for 2026. With 50-70 hours of early access campaign, the naval combat, and the co-op base building, it deserves a server host that matches the quality of the game itself.
The official hosting partner isn't your only option — and for many players, it's not the best one. If you want a host with a fully featured world manager, responsive support, and hardware that's ready for the long haul, Nodecraft is the best alternative to Nitrado for Windrose.
